Options for Life is a charity that provides support to adults with learning disabilities and/or autism with opportunities to enhance their skills and, ultimately, their quality of life. One of the pivotal ways they achieve this is through the use of assistive technology.

The Digital Revolution at Options for Life

Thanks to grants from Mencap and The Roger & Douglas Turner Charitable Trust, along with support from the Community Infrastructure Levy grant of the Sandwell Council, we have been able to introduce assistive technology into the lives of our participants. These participants now have access to tablets and laptops, opening up a world of possibilities.

Digital Skills Sessions at Oak Green Lodge Hub We organise weekly digital skills sessions at the Oak Green Lodge hub for our participants. These sessions are more than just lessons; they are opportunities for empowerment and independence. Participants learn to use their tablets and laptops for various purposes, from checking and sending emails to watching videos and browsing online shopping portals.

Connecting with Loved Ones One of the most heartwarming outcomes of this initiative is how participants have embraced digital communication. They log on to their Gmail accounts to connect with family members and friends, bridging geographical gaps and nurturing relationships. Technology has become a conduit for love and togetherness.

Zooming In on New Experiences Before receiving their tablets, many participants had never used Zoom. Now, they not only participate in digital sessions every week but also host their own Zoom calls. This newfound confidence in technology has transformed how they interact with others, enabling them to stay connected and engaged with their communities.

Learning and Fun The tablets also serve as valuable educational tools. Participants explore platforms like BBC Bitesize to learn about history, take notes and expand their knowledge. They engage in "Makaton Music" sessions, learning sign language through YouTube videos. And let's not forget the joy of word searches, jigsaw puzzles, and quizzes, all made accessible through their tablets.

Unleashing Creativity Technology doesn't just cater to the mind; it also nurtures creativity. Some participants indulge in paint-by-numbers and drawing games, expressing themselves in new and exciting ways. These digital activities empower them to explore their artistic talents.

With her tablet, Charlotte has mastered Zoom, not only joining meetings but also hosting them to catch up with friends from other hubs. She's also become proficient in installing apps and sending emails using Gmail.
