At Acorn Lodge, we’re always looking for creative, meaningful ways to support our participants in building confidence, independence, and joy through daily experiences. This week, our hub enjoyed three enriching activities that perfectly reflect Options for Life’s commitment to promoting independence, lifelong learning, community inclusion, and wellbeing.
📚 A Cosy Morning of Reading Inspiration at Oldbury Library
Participants and staff spent a calm, cosy morning at Oldbury Library, exploring shelves filled with colourful, engaging books. The group chatted about stories, discovered new genres, and searched for inspiration to develop our own reading corner back at the hub.
This activity offered far more than a quiet morning out:
Impact on Participants
Encouraged communication and confidence as participants shared their favourite types of stories.
Supported literacy development and fostered a love for reading.
Promoted community inclusion, aligning with our aim to help participants access and enjoy local facilities.
Inspired new ideas to co-create a reading space that reflects their tastes and interests — encouraging ownership and decision‑making.
🍰 Sensory Baking & Food Preparation: Hands-On Independent Living Skills
Back at the hub, another group took part in sensory baking and food preparation sessions. With support from staff, participants practised cutting, whisking, stirring, and preparing ingredients.
The sensory element — touching, smelling, and exploring textures — helped make the session both engaging and therapeutic.
Impact on Participants
Built practical independent living skills, supporting Options for Life’s goal of increasing autonomy in day-to-day life.
Strengthened fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination.
Boosted self-esteem as participants completed tasks at their own pace.
Created opportunities to make choices, problem-solve, and participate actively in preparing food.
🎬 A New Adventure: The 4D Cinematic Sensory Experience
Some participants trialled a brand‑new session — a 4D cinematic sensory experience inspired by the film Ratatouille. While watching the story unfold, participants explored themed sensory objects, linking the film to real‑world textures and sensations.
This immersive session transformed a simple movie into a rich multisensory adventure.
Impact on Participants
Offered a relaxed, immersive environment that supported sensory needs.
Encouraged engagement and focus through the combination of visuals, touch, and sound.
Helped participants connect storytelling with real-life sensory experiences — a powerful tool for meaning‑making.
Supported emotional wellbeing by offering a calm, enjoyable space to unwind.
